What is RAM?

Random Access Memory or better known as RAM memory is a form of digital/computerized data storage. It was between 1949 and 1952 that the first form of RAM memory was used in computer systems and at the time was called the magnetic core memory. It wasn’t until the 1960s and the early 1970s that the development of static and dynamic integrated RAM memory circuits came into circulation and it was from then that computer systems started to use this newer form of RAM memory, forgetting the old RAM memory types.

The modern types of RAM memory on the market today generally either store data bits in a state of flip-flop which is called SRAM (static RAM memory) or as a charge through a capacitor DRAM (Dynamic RAM memory). EPROM, EEPROM and FLASH are other types of RAM memory that are available, however Dynamic RAM memory and Static RAM memory are by far the most common which most of us have heard of.

The RAM memory types SRAM and DRAM are volatile and are used within most computer systems and laptops, however, the much newer products to the market such as netbooks and PDA’s rely solely on flash memory rather than the magnetic RAM.

The RAM memory that you will need for your computer system depends on the tasks that you will be doing. If you are buying RAM memory for a standard home computer system, then no more than 1GB of RAM memory will be needed. For gaming systems, you would need a RAM memory size of at least 2GB. This is because high end graphic and other visual application require as much as this to display correctly on the screen.

With RAM memory, the sizes go up in multiples of two. So, you will expect to find 32MB, 64MB, 128MB and so on. In most of the modern computer systems of today, you will generally find sticks of RAM of around 256MB. When installing RAM, it is also important to keep in mind that you should check the RAM speed which is always indicated on the side of the RAM chip. This should be something like 266 or 333. The theory here is simple, the higher the speed, the more RAM memory you can install.

The more RAM that you have on your computer system, the much faster it will process so if your computer system is running quite slow and sluggish, then an upgrade may be necessary.
