How to inspect a refurbished laptop before you buy it

Posted in News by PC Renewed on November 27th 2023
So you're considering a refurbished laptop? Smart choice! But before you hit that "buy" button, let's talk inspection. PC Renewed are proud suppliers of pre-loved tech and want you to feel confident and excited about your new (to you) machine. So, grab your magnifying glass (metaphorically, of course), and let's dive into the world of pre-purchase testing!

1. Unbox with a critical eye

This isn't Christmas morning, but it can still be magical! Examine the packaging for any signs of rough handling. Scratches or dents on the box could hint at internal damage. Once inside, check for all accessories and paperwork. Are they there, are they pristine, and do they match the listing description?

2. Give it the once-over

Take a good look at the laptop's exterior. Does it match the advertised "grade"? Minor scratches are expected, but cracks, dents, or uneven gaps are red flags. Open it up and inspect the screen, keyboard, and trackpad for dead pixels, discolouration, or worn keys. Check ports for dust or damage.

If you’re unsure of which grade laptop to buy, read our blog explaining what laptop grades are and why they matter.

3. Power on and explore

Boot it up! Does it take an eternity to start? Does it make strange noises? Is the operating system the one advertised? Run a quick diagnostic test to check the hard drive, RAM, and processor for any hiccups.

4. Put it through its paces

Don't be shy! Open multiple applications, stream a video, play a game and browse the internet. See how the laptop handles multitasking and heavier loads. Does it lag, overheat, or make unsettling clicking sounds?

Alternatively, run a stress test software like Prime95 or FurMark. This will push the CPU and GPU to their limits, helping you identify any potential overheating or stability issues. Remember, a little stress now can save you a lot of headaches later.

5. Check connectivity

Test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and any other relevant connections. Can it seamlessly connect to your network and devices? No dropped calls or glitchy video conferences allowed!

6. Battery life matters

Plug it in and let it charge to full. Then, unplug and see how long it lasts with typical usage. Does it match the advertised battery health? Remember, refurbished batteries may not hold the same charge as brand new ones.

7. Software savvy

Is pre-installed software genuine and bloatware-free? Can you easily uninstall unwanted programs and install your own favourites? Ensure you have administrator access so there are no hidden surprises.

At PC Renewed, our high spec refurbished laptops come with the latest software installed including Windows 11. Contact us if you have any questions about the software on our devices.

8. Ask questions, get answers

Don't hesitate to contact the seller! A reputable refurbished laptop company should be happy to answer any questions and address any concerns you might have.

Bonus tip: Look for companies that offer warranties and return policies. This gives you peace of mind that you are buying a quality product. PC Renewed offers a 1 year warranty on all products.

Remember, buying refurbished is a fantastic way to save money and get a great machine. But a little pre-purchase inspection can turn a good deal into a dream come true. So, arm yourself with knowledge, follow these tips, and prepare to welcome your pre-loved tech love into your life!
